Grocery Shop Smart: Workshop Recap

Hey team! So, you missed our “Grocery Shop Smart” workshop last weekend? No worries, I’ve got the rundown for you right here, so you can still score all the smart shopping tips we shared.

Where It's At: Shopping Smart

First things first, when you hit the grocery store, try sticking to the perimeter as much as you can. Why? Because that’s where the fresh stuff like fruits, veggies, protein, and dairy hang out. The middle aisles can be a minefield of processed foods—tempting, yes, but not what we’re after!

Label Lowdown

We dove deep into those tricky nutrition labels. Remember, the big three macros—protein, fats, and carbs—are your buddies.

Keep an eye on sodium, added sugars, and those sneaky trans fats that like to pop up in packaged foods. And all those percentages? They’re based on a standard 2,000 calorie diet, so adjust accordingly if your diet differs.

Shop Sections Breakdown

Produce: Grab those seasonal goodies for the best flavors and prices. Learn to store them right so they last longer.

Pantry Staples: Go for the long-lasting stuff—beans, nuts, whole grains. They’re pantry gold.

Protein Picks: Whether you’re all about meat or plant-based, buying in bulk is the way to go. Freeze what you won’t use right away.

Dairy and Non Dairy: Low-fat dairy or plant milks like almond or soy are great choices for keeping it lean.

Picking Packaged Foods

When you’re eyeing those packaged foods, remember: the fewer ingredients, the better. If sodium, fat, or sugar levels are high, maybe put that box back on the shelf.

Saving $$$ at the Store

Here’s how you can keep your wallet happy:

Stick to your list: This one’s a game-changer. Make a list, check it twice, and don’t stray.

Coupon Clip with Apps: Use those grocery apps to snag deals—but only on stuff you need.

Sales and Bulk Buys: Stock up when prices drop, especially on staples you always use.

Spotting the Freshest Produce

Get the best bang for your buck with vibrant, firm produce. Avoid anything that looks like it’s past its prime—no squishy spots or dull colors.

More Protein, Please

Trying to up your protein intake? Start with the protein on your plate, sneak some powder into shakes or bakes, or go for those leaner, meaner cuts of meat.

Treat Yourself (Wisely)

And for my sweet-toothed friends, there’s no need to cut out desserts. Opt for things like Greek yogurt with a sprinkle of dark chocolate or berries, or treat yourself to a YASSO bar now and then. Just keep it moderate!

So there you have it! Implementing these tips can make your grocery shopping smarter and your diet healthier. Missed chatting with you at the workshop, but hope this helps you feel like you were there. Can’t wait to see how you all use these tips to shop smarter and eat healthier! Happy shopping, team!
